From my Twitter thread: I've been working on research projects looking at lesbian magazines since second year of undergraduate study. That's oh god, it's 20 years. Today something kind of magical happened and I want to tell you about it. Most of my magazine's research has focused on DIVA magazine, which started in 1994, but … Continue reading Lesbian history
Writing, writing, writing
It turns out that I'm not terribly good at remembering to post updates on my work in progress (I know, we are all SHOCKED), but I designated this week "Book Blitz" week, which loosely translates as: autoreplies are on, music is turned up, and Scrivener is open. Armed with not one but two spider diagrams1 … Continue reading Writing, writing, writing
JK Rowling’s rhetorical ‘appeal’
How could Rowling’s essay be considered thoughtful when it could be so readily debunked? How did she pull that off?
New BBC Director General
A quick note on the appointment of Tim Davie as DG Today it was announced that the BBC's new Director General will be Tim Davie; you might recognise the name because he's currently the head of BBC Studios, and was one of the people whom I and others spoke to about the Berena debacle. Ready for the long weekend
I set my alarm for 7am on a Friday morning. What a fool Past Me was! I was far too tired and it was far too Friday-ish a Friday; I sat in bed with my phone and slowly drank a coffee with a Twitter Angst chaser. Artwork by Marzi I was in the office by … Continue reading Ready for the long weekend
Thursday update
Didn't get much done yesterday, having made the mistake of getting up late and sitting in the sun drinking a coffee - my brain turned to mush and I basically spent a lot of time being Too Warm To Function, not least because I cycled in a jumper on the hottest day of the year. … Continue reading Thursday update
Managing ‘working from home’
I've been toying with a post like this for quite a while now, by turns encouraged by the honesty with which others, including academics, have been talking about working practices in the current climate and discouraged by fear of undermining the confidence of others in my ability to meet the demands of my job. My … Continue reading Managing ‘working from home’
Moving on
After weeks of rumours, it's been confirmed that Catherine Russell has left Holby City and Serena Campbell's final episodes will be aired in the new year, in what Digital Spy are calling a "heroic departure". Not for Ms Campbell an urn upturned in the shrubbery beside the ambulance bay, as was Bernie's fate in this … Continue reading Moving on
On gratitude
A very quick post on the topic of gratitude – because I’ve seen quite a few people saying that we should all stop criticising Holby City and be grateful for the Berena storyline, even though it’s delivered an awful lot of pain over the past eight months or so. Let’s think about the people who … Continue reading On gratitude
My experience of Radio DIVA
On Tuesday, I took part in a discussion about lesbian and bi representation on television on Radio DIVA. When I opened Twitter, I realised that lots of the people listening had experienced the discussion differently to me, and in ways that I think it’s important to address.
